Truck Driver/Rail Unloader

Job Summary

As a truck driver/rail unloader there will be two main focuses for this position. Truck driving practices specific to the transport of inbound and outbound materials as directed by site leadership as well as railcar unloading and material transport from rail facility to onsite storage.

Job Functions

Trucking

  • Transport and drive equipment to and from job sites in a safe and timely manner
  • Assist, load and supervise loading of truck in order to ensure proper order and weight distribution, assure safety of the cargo, equipment, and limit danger to people
  • Maintain complete and accurate records such as, daily logs, fuel logs, fuel receipts, delivery documentation.
  • Obtain shipping documents and necessary signatures and return said documents to appropriate department as required.
  • Inspect, monitor all gauges and equipment, provide and document proper routine maintenance of trucks/equipment in accordance with established policies, reporting concerns or problems immediately.
  • Operate trucks and equipment in accordance with all DOT regulations and observe all safety regulations established by Asphalt Materials Inc. and the DMV for the safe operation of commercial vehicles.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles and/or equipment to a high standard of cleanliness
  • Assist in training others to operate assigned trucks/equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned by the site leadership

Rail

  • Load/Unload materials between rail, truck, and/or storage.
  • Safely operate various types of equipment.
  • Inspect and trouble shoot equipment; perform minor repairs and routine maintenance of equipment as may be required.
  • Report orally and in writing to as required and maintain accurate records (i.e. activity reports, inventory reports, maintenance logs, etc.) as directed.
  • Participate in general training, job specific training and hazardous materials training as required; successfully complete written examinations as required.
  • Understand and follow all policies, procedures, and safety rules as applicable to facility, job function and equipment, including rules governing safety around railroad tracks and equipment.
  • Keep facilities and equipment clean and maintained.
  • Recommend changes to the operation which may produce safer work processes, savings, and efficiencies.
  • Abiding by yard rules, safety regulations and PPE requirements
  • Accurately completing all required paperwork
  • Abide by terminals processes and procedures relating to product transfers, quality assurance, safety and operations.
  • Complete required training and certifications necessary to perform duties safely and effectively.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must demonstrate strong teamwork skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written communication) with management, staff and outside entities as well as follow verbal and written instructions in English
  • Ability to read, follow and interpret safety documents, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Safety consciousness
  • Knowledge of construction principles, techniques and procedures strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to continuously stand or walk on level or uneven ground.
  • Must have the ability to ascend and descend railcars, ladders, stairways and incline catwalks.
  • Must have ability to climb on top and underneath railcars in order to inspect and seal railcars using a checklist.
  • Must have the ability to bend, crouch and/or kneel at waist or knees.
  • Must have the ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to work outside majority of the time and withstand extreme weather conditions. Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.

Experience, Education and Other Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work overtime, when needed
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • CDL or ability to obtain one within specified time after being hired
  • Tanker Endorsement or ability to obtain endorsement within a specified time after being hired
  • Haz-Mat Certification or willingness to obtain certification within a specified timeframe
  • Must have history of safe driving record
  • Must pass a criminal background check, routine physical and drug screen
  • Must maintain regular, dependable attendance and a high level of performance
  • Follow written and verbal directions to complete assigned tasks on schedule.
  • Read, write, and communicate in English & understand basic math.
  • Working knowledge of Asphalt Materials Inc. Safety and Operating principles
  • Complete all applicable documentation, recordkeeping and daily inventory.
  • Participate in safety briefings, job briefings, and any other pass on information from team members, management, or customer.
  • Must be able to work with a team, take direction and follow work rules, as well as take on additional job responsibilities as needed or assigned.
  • Flexibility required; ability to work days, nights, weekends.
  • Perform all work in compliance with Company standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Must possess and exhibit excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently to get things done.
