Technical Director, Pavement Engineering

We are seeking a Technical Director and People Leader for our Pavement Engineering Team within Heritage Research Group (HRG), which is the development and innovation arm of The Heritage Group. The team currently consists of 24 technical experts who are passionate about solving problems and innovation in the construction and materials field. The technical director is expected to maintain an enabling environment for researchers and engineers to make a positive difference through their technical contributions, people leadership, inclusive partnerships, and driving their personal passions.

The Technical Director and team provide technical support to The Heritage Group Companies, particularly Heritage Construction & Materials Group (HC&M). We are seeking a leader for a talented team of asphalt research scientists and pavement engineers who will drive and prioritize the innovation pipeline and provide technical support to HC&M companies to implement innovative ideas through commercialization.

This role reports directly to the EVP of Research & Development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Effectively provide the team with the resources and the support to be successful and safe
  • As part of the HRG leadership collaborate with other senior managers to establish strategic plans and objectives for HRG and particularly for the pavement team based on industry best practices and HC&M strategic priorities
  • Establish goals and KPI's that are aligned with the broader HRG and HC&M strategic initiatives and innovation goals
  • Define and manage day to day operations of the team and manage the budget
  • Lead a cross-functional team and manage all aspects of innovation, product development, research, and plant support
  • Provide technical support and resolution for implementation across HC&M lines of business such as AMI (80%)
  • Manage HRG field experiments/trials/pilots for innovation team projects
  • Manage relationships across external industry organizations to stay up to date on trends, resources, and support network
  • Partner across The Heritage Group of operating companies to leverage best practices, knowledge, talent to resolve company-wide R&D issues
  • Attract, hire, and retain high-performing technical talent to create career paths within and across The Heritage Group of businesses
  • Ensure we maintain a safe physical and inclusive work environment for all employees and contractors and have established mindset for continuous improvement of THG safety culture
  • Mentor team members to enhance their knowledge and career opportunities.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% to job sites and meetings

Background & Experience

  • Education: Civil, Chemical, or Mechanical engineering degree, Master's or Ph.D. preferred
  • Work experience: Minimum of 15 years working in the asphalt industry or related field and leading teams of technical experts
  • Indiana Professional Engineer License is preferred
  • Experience with road construction, asphalt products, and mix-design is required.
  • Basic knowledge of an asphalt emulsion plant would be a benefit
  • Advanced ability to translate technical data into a format/language suitable for operations and maintenance personnel
  • Demonstrated ability to Identify and connect opportunities between the businesses
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize tasks to achieve established deadlines
  • Experience or demonstrated ability to work with federal, state, county, and local agencies
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to recognize IP opportunities and initiate
