Research Chemist, Asphalt Binder and Emulsion

The Research Chemist will be responsible for working with a team to develop new products for the asphalt binder and emulsion industry using a focused approach to both laboratory and field testing. The successful candidate will be able to accurately and consistently produce and test asphalt binder and emulsion formulations in a timely manner. This will involve the formulation and production of blends and emulsions, testing of research samples and field samples, innovative and creative thinking, analyzing data, and problem-solving. Qualified candidates should have strong motivation to actively learn in a hands-on laboratory environment while maintaining high standards in quality of work in a team-oriented atmosphere.

Functions and Responsibilities:

• Observe safe work practices at all times
• Follow industry-standard preparation and testing protocol and quality control guidelines
• Record and organize information from a variety of sources accurately
• Communicate effectively with all members of the asphalt binder and emulsion team, The Heritage Research Group, and other internal and external partners
• Use a variety of equipment at high temperatures to effectively prepare samples
• Prepare and test specimens according to industry standards and specifications
• Evaluate and analyze test results and provide input for further improvement
• Collect materials from field trials and asphalt plant locations when needed
• Assist in general maintenance and calibration of all laboratory equipment
• Maintain good housekeeping practices

Qualifications:

• Associates or Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related science is preferred
• Outstanding organizational, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills
• Capable of managing time and easily able to perform multiple tasks at once
• Effective communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders
• Ability to respond proactively to needs or issues
• Ability to read, understand, and follow ASTM, AASHTO, D.O.T., county, etc. testing methods

Work Environment:

• This position maintains a 40-hour workweek throughout the year, with limited travel
• Paid Vacation and full benefits package included
• May be requested to work overtime and on the weekends as needed
• This position may ask the following physical requirements: sitting or standing for long periods of time; lifting up to 50 pounds, bending to lift, crouching, kneeling, walking, wearing protective clothing for extended periods of time
• This position regularly asks the individual to work safely in environments with hot materials, pungent odors, dust, chemicals, and loud noise, requiring the use of employer-provided personal protective equipment

Knowledge and Abilities:

• Quick learner with the ability to work independently, think critically and with a variety of team members
• Strong attention to detail with high standards of integrity
• Timely, positive, and professional work habits
• Interest or experience in materials testing or in the road construction industry is a plus
• Ability to present technical findings to people outside of the industry
