Pugmill Operator/Quality Control Crew Leader

General Requirements and Responsibilities

Must be able to work safely and independently, be trustworthy, able to take on responsibilities, take and give direction, make reasonable decisions, understand and perform daily maintenance and light mechanical repairs, have basic math skills, have the ability to perform necessary field quality control tasks, able to spend extended days away from home, work in ever-changing locations with a variety of co-workers, possess good communication skills, supervise employees assisting with mixing operation and quality control tasks. Must possess a current driver's license, CDL preferred.

Essential Tasks

  • Responsible to safely operate and maintain a mobile mixing plant and support equipment:
    • Use basic math skills to determine proper ratios of materials needed to produce the required finished product
    • Determine daily material needs and place timely orders as is required
    • Adjust controls to regulate the flow and proper ratio of materials
  • Perform daily and timely walk-around and site inspections for all equipment to identify and maintain safe site and equipment conditions
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance to ensure equipment is properly maintained, ready to run and serviced as needed
  • Perform necessary quality control testing and make necessary adjustments to material blends as indicated by test results
  • Monitor inventory levels of all materials and place orders as needed to assure uninterrupted production
  • Communicate with contractor/customer representatives to maintain production levels and adjust production as needed
  • Setup, tear down and calibrate plant
  • Supervise employees at the plant site. May be designated to train employees as needed
  • Certified welder and the ability to safely and proficiently use cutting torches are a plus
  • Monitor plant site to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow
  • Troubleshoot, problem solve and successfully discuss and resolve production problems with co-workers, supervisors, and clients
  • Accurately complete plant reports and other documentation as needed
  • Develop and maintain good relations with customers on an ongoing basis
  • Must have the initiative and willingness to perform and assist with other job positions for job completion as requested
  • Load and unload equipment
  • Follow directions of the supervisor as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or job site
  • Be willing to travel and work away from home when required
  • Be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary
  • Be able to work overtime as required
  • Will be required to perform quality control testing for pugmill operation and micro-surfacing operation when required. Typical testing will be material gradation, moisture content, extractions of processed material and verify job mix formulas for projects being performed
  • During pugmill and micro-surfacing downtime this person may be required to collect aggregate and asphalt samples for future mix designs, pavement coring as necessary to evaluate pavements for future recycling and preservation

Qualifications

  • The preferred candidate will have 2 or more years of Asphalt Plant, Mobile Mixing or Pugmill Operator and/or field quality control experience
  • Must have excellent verbal, oral, and written communication skills. This job requires the ability to communicate successfully with a variety of employees under high-stress situations
  • The job requires high attention to detail, including the ability to perform basic math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Comprehension of basic percentages is necessary in order to successfully calculate quantities of materials used in cold constructed asphalt, cold central plant recycled material and micro-surfacing
  • Must demonstrate excellent safety awareness and willingness to comply with company policies and safety standards.
  • Must wear proper attire at all times and reflect a clean presentable image
  • Continuous mental and visual attention is necessary to safely and effectively complete work tasks
  • Project a professional and cooperative attitude by maintaining courteous and professional dialog with Supervisor, co-workers, customers, and the general public

Working Conditions

  • Must have and maintain the ability to lift, pull and push a minimum of 50 pounds, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat, twist and climb on heavy equipment several times throughout the day, and work at heights of 6 feet or more from ground level. In addition, you must have the ability to be on your feet regularly and use hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job. This includes frequently walking on slopes, slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as working in tight spaces
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time
  • Natural or corrected vision is necessary to assure proper mixing and monitor gauges.
  • This job requires the ability to perform essential job tasks in sometimes less than favorable job conditions. These may include, but not limited to: Performing strenuous work in varying temperatures, humidity, sand, wind or other extreme inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time
  • Work may be performed in an environment with exposure to extremely hot materials, fuel, fumes, vapors, dust, grease, and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise and exposure to moving equipment that will all require appropriate PPE
