Plant Operator - Tri State Asphalt

Job Summary:

Under general supervision of the Plant Manager, this intermediate level position performs general operator tasks as described below. This position is one of three intermediate steps in a progression of related jobs. You will work as part of a team to ensure the overall operation of the terminal including basic functions such as receipt and shipment of products all, manufacturing of products, inspection and recordkeeping requirements, and the maintenance of the equipment in the facility.

In the event of terminal and other system "call outs", you are willing to be available for on-call rotation during selected nights and weekends as required by the number of personnel in rotation.

Safety of our employees is of the highest priority. Employees will be required to participate in multiple facility safety programs and engage in the employee-owned safety culture of the facility.

Job Functions:

  • Receiving and shipment of raw materials, asphalt, and emulsion products
  • Manufacturing of asphalt products
  • Able to conduct dispatching duties and maintain relations with vendors
  • CM Loading (Multi-grade)
  • MC Loading
  • Maintain and update plant operations inspections and recordkeeping documents
  • Assist in operating and adjusting plant pumps, valves, motors, feeders, and other equipment to maintain appropriate plant operations
  • Perform general plant facility maintenance such as cleaning, painting and repairing plant facilities; perform various grounds maintenance duties
  • Follow and assist to ensure that all safety policies are followed and implemented
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends

Qualifications:

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of plant operations
  • Operation principles of plant equipment such as valves, pumps, and motors
  • Methods and techniques of maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting plant equipment and processes
  • Basic mechanical and/or electrical knowledge
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications

Ability to:

  • Operate and monitor asphalt plant equipment
  • Diagnose operating problems and take effective courses of action
  • Make independent technical decisions to maintain proper treatment process
  • Perform routine to difficult maintenance, repairs and installations to plant equipment such as pumps and valves
  • Perform heavy manual labor
  • Logically solve problems
  • Adapt to changing technologies and learn functionality of new equipment and systems.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Education and Experience Guidelines:

Education/Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Ideally, the candidate would have 2-year technical or mechanical degree.
  • 1 year of production/maintenance experience in the refined products terminal or production facilities and/or oil or gas industry.
  • Basic mechanical/electrical knowledge.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

Environment: Exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, solvents, electrical energy, toxic materials, hazardous chemicals and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work in confined spaces; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces.

Physical:

  • This job requires the ability to life, pull, and push a minimum of 50 lbs., bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat, and climb heavy equipment several times throughout the day, and balance with heights. In addition, you must have the ability to be on your feet and use hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job. This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as working in confined areas.
  • The ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Requires the ability to perform essential job tasks in less than favorable conditions. These may include, but are not limited to: Performing strenuous work in varying temperatures, humidity, sand, wind, or other extreme inclement weather conditions for an extended period of time
