Pavement Materials Intern - Summer 2019

Heritage Research Group is seeking a qualified student pursuing a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related degree to join a team of industry and research professionals in the Summer of 2019 as a Pavement Materials Intern. Qualified candidates will have a strong motivation to actively learn in a hands-on laboratory environment and maintain high standards in quality of work in a team-oriented atmosphere.

This opportunity is part of a team of engineers, technicians, and scientists that maintains a focus on pavement materials and testing. The internship is designed to develop practical engineering skills related to pavement engineering.    

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Gain hands-on experience with testing aggregate, asphalt, hot mix asphalt and recycled pavement mixtures
  • Gain proficiency with asphalt mix design lab principles and procedures
  • Assist the team in sampling pavements for recycling mix design
  • Conduct a research project within the scope of the pavement materials team, culminating with a presentation to the Heritage Research Group at the conclusion of the internship

Requirements:

  • College Freshman/Sophomore/Junior actively pursuing a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology or related degree
  • An emphasis on construction, materials, geotechnical, or transportation disciplines preferred
  • Interest or experience in materials testing, construction, or research is a plus
  • Must commit to 10-12 week internship

  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Development-minded with ability to work independently and within various teams
  • Organized with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Timely, positive and professional work habits
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Work Environment:

  • This position may ask the individual to work safely in some environments with dust and noise
  • This position may ask the following physical requirements: sitting or standing for long periods of time; lifting up to 50 pounds; bending to lift; crouching, kneeling, walking
  • Must be able to pass a background check and physical/drug test
