Organic Research Chemist

Description: We are seeking an organic chemist to help develop solutions to the diverse problems that we take on through chemical synthesis and characterization. We need an ambitious and dedicated colleague who is excited to contribute to hands-on research. The candidate must have a comprehensive knowledge of organic synthesis as well as other analytical techniques (including FTIR, LCMS, and GCMS). The candidate must also have experience with hazardous waste disposal and treatment. Duties include but are not limited to conducting organic synthesis, reaction monitoring, and product analysis, bench chemistry, hazardous waste disposal, and other laboratory duties as designated by direct supervisor.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other researchers to conduct various organic syntheses.
    • Set up and maintain laboratory equipment.
    • Independently plan, lead, and safely execute technical work that can vary from moderate to high complexity that could include new molecule development, distillation, extraction, polymer synthesis, etc.
    • Solve chemical problems using literature and market searches, experimentation, and data interpretation.
    • Conduct and monitor experiments including chemical and physical analysis of compounds.
    • Prepare reports to communicate complications or findings to the team.
  • Work as part of multidisciplinary team to analyze research group samples.
    • Deliver the necessary analytical information for each sample/project.
    • Determine appropriate analytical tests for sample analysis.
    • Perform bench chemistries and conduct sample preparation and analysis based on project needs.
    • Prepare reports to communicate findings of samples/projects.
  • Coordinate disposal of hazardous waste
    • Organize and carry out hazardous waste disposal.
    • Communicate with appropriate authorities and organizations.
  • Help develop cross-functional knowledge across THG/HRG.
  • Drive department safety improvements

Requirements:

  • PhD in Organic Chemistry or related field or master's degree with equivalent experience plus 3-5 years experience in a synthetic chemistry and/or manufacturing lab setting is preferred.
  • Creativity and problem solvent skills to find solutions to business opportunities.
  • Proficiency in various types of synthetic methodologies, synthesis problem solving, and total synthesis.
  • Experience handling hazardous waste.
  • Knowledge of hazardous waste classifications
  • Broad knowledge of characterization techniques
  • Demonstrated application of scientific principles, theory, and experimental design.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Willingness to work on other research projects as needed.
  • Understanding and implementation of safe laboratory practices
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Multitasking and prioritization skills with the ability to be self-motivated
  • Must have a strong work ethic and be willing to travel occasionally.

This position is based in Indianapolis, IN. Qualified candidates must currently reside or be willing to relocate to the Indianapolis, IN area
