The Position

This Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt will report to the Director of Business Improvement at The Heritage Group. As a leader by influence and change agent, you will partner with our team to grow our continuous improvement program while strengthening our internal and external relationships. Your servant leadership mindset will earn you the role of a trusted business partner who can be an excellent coach, while also being coachable yourself to strengthen our vision of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities   Specific responsibilities will include, but are not be limited to:

  • Deploy our continuous improvement program with a focus on more deeply embedding Lean and Six Sigma methodologies across the Heritage Group of Companies. You will be held accountable to achieve results through influencing, coaching, and mentoring your respective project Sponsors, Champions, and Belts (Green and Black).
  • Develop, maintain, and support the end-to-end elements of our Lean Six Sigma business approach which encompasses identifying, prioritizing and solving important business and customer problems, celebrating our success and sustaining the gains. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Maintaining the integrity of the Lean Six Sigma process in the supported organization(s) across the entire portfolio of the Heritage Group companies, and all functions (Manufacturing, Finance, HR, Supply Chain, etc.) with a focus on sustainable cultural changes and capabilities to solve important business and customer problems.
      • Ensure that project gate reviews are robust through structured governance.
      • Develops rigorous control plans and control sign-offs by working closely with process owners, project champions and senior management to ensure improvement gains are sustained on a long-term basis.
    • Deliver Lean Six Sigma training (YB, GB, and BB) in a classroom environment and facilitate hands-on exercises and simulations to ensure that training is never academic.
    • Coach and mentor individuals and teams in the practical application of Lean Six Sigma tools through their start to full completion of their projects with a cultural adoption into their respective business.
    • Troubleshoot with team members to resolve obstacles/roadblocks, serve as a sounding board for problem resolution, and ensures smooth, continuous progress on projects.
    • Participate in project selection & analysis.
    • Ensure information in our centralized PPM platform (PowerSteering) is kept up to date for tracking and reporting purposes, as appropriate to our sphere of influence.
    • Develop high-quality summaries/presentations in layman's terms for appropriate stakeholders and projects.
    • Foster sharing of best practices, and networking among Lean Six Sigma practitioners, which may also include a regular practitioner's summits.
    • Contribute to the celebration of success, rewards for belt completion, project completion, and Board Chairman's award.

Qualifications and Candidate Background   The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a full-time Master Black Belt or (8-10) years of experience as a full-time Black Belt (or some combination thereof) with hands-on Lean Six Sigma expertise in medium or large/complex organizations as well as deep technical expertise coupled with the heart of a teacher to enable others to succeed. This includes:
    • Participation in enterprise-level Lean Six Sigma deployment in medium, large, or complex organizations (required)
    • Six Sigma Black Belt/Master Black Belt certification from a reputable program (required)
    • Expertise in applying LEAN and DMAIC improvement methodologies (required) as well as DFSS (preferred)
    • Lean Master Certifications from reputable program (preferred)
    • Fluency with Minitab software (strongly preferred)
    • Fluency in the Microsoft O365 suite of programs (required)
    • Fluency in PowerSteering and Crystal Ball software
  • Bachelor's Degree in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) required
    • Chemical engineering is a plus
    • Masters in a STEM field and/or business is a plus
  • Background in manufacturing is highly preferred; chemical manufacturing is a plus
  • Demonstrated business acumen such as P&L leadership and/or a diverse set of commercial/business functional roles is a plus
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a bias toward action, and ability to work independently with little or no direction as you are known for anticipating needs before they are asked.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to handle ambiguity and situations where there is no clear answer or prescribed path.
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to engage audiences at all levels.
  • Strong leadership, persuasion, and team management skills.

  • Post phone screen, you could be asked to submit a copy of your certification(s) and a brief portfolio with a summary of project results (1 page per project maximum) in the following format for each project you choose to submit:
    • Project problem or opportunity statement (one paragraph)
    • Summary of key issues and findings including methodology and tools used (two paragraphs)
    • Realized benefits (one paragraph)
  • Number of Greenbelt and Blackbelt courses you have facilitated and how many students were in each
  • Number and type of "belts" you have coached through their projects from start to finish

Location

  • The position will be based in Indianapolis, IN with occasional travel (<10%).
