GC MS Chemist, Heritage Research Group

Description

The GCMS Chemist is responsible for generating analyses in support of the R&D programs and technical service efforts for The Heritage Group's business units. The data is generated to internal customers with minimal supervision. This position requires hands on laboratory work involving a variety of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry tools and methods in a laboratory environment shared with other team members. Work is to be performed in accordance with safe laboratory practices and with active participation in Heritage Research Group's safety initiatives and programs.

Functions and Responsibilities:

• Fully participate in Heritage Research Group's safety programs and ensures safe laboratory operation.
• Work closely with internal customers, project teams and lab colleagues to solve technical problems.
• Prepare and analyze samples by gas chromatography and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.
• Analyze and interpret data, and perform additional experiments as needed.
• Write detailed technical reports and create presentations to communicate results to multiple levels within the company.
• Multitask effectively and manage dynamic workload including routine work and multiple projects.
• Responsible for instrument maintenance and upkeep by performing maintenance independently and interfacing with instrument vendors as needed.
• Contribute to the innovative culture at The Heritage Group by exhibiting curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit, and collaboration with others to constantly improve our methods and products.

Qualifications and Experience Required

• MS in Chemistry with prior industrial experience highly desired OR a BS in Chemistry and a minimum of 5 years of industrial experience.
• Demonstrated ability to handle and work with hazardous materials, and to work safely and independently in a chemical laboratory environment.
• Theoretical and practical understanding of chromatography and mass spectrometry theory.
• Extensive experience developing, validating, and utilizing GC methods with various detectors including FID, TCD, and MS.
• Familiarity with Agilent and/or LECO GC/MS instrumentation and software preferred.
• Ability to interpret mass spectral data independently and using libraries to elucidate structures.
• Experience with various sample preparation techniques including dissolution, liquid-liquid extraction, and solid phase extraction.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair GC and GC/MS instrumentation as needed.
• Excellent communication skills, ability to deliver results independently, and a strong desire to collaborate is critical.
• Experience with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook required.
• Willingness to work on other research projects as needed.
• Understanding and implementation of safe laboratory practices.

• High level of effective communication skills both oral and written.
• Time management/organizational skills and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in plans and priorities.

Work Environment:

• May need to lift samples in 5-gallon pails.
• May require occasional travel.
