We have an opening for an Environmental Compliance Specialist. This is an on-site role, based in Indianapolis, that requires daytime travel throughout the state.
The Environmental Compliance Specialist performs activities to ensure environmental and regulatory compliance within the organization, with emphasis on asphalt plant and field operations. Activities include, but are not limited to, site visits, inspections, audits, permitting and zoning application submissions.
Essential Functions:
- Monitors and maintains regulatory compliance
- Develops and maintains current and comprehensive knowledge of all regulatory and environmental regulations affecting the business
- Prepares and submits required permits and compliance documents
- Conducts internal and external environmental compliance audits
- Implements any environmental corrective/preventive actions required
- Ensures internal policies meet organizational standards for ethics, integrity, and conflict of interests
- Completes and controls required documentation
- Follows environmental policies, procedures, and work instructions
- Maintains and executes storm water pollution prevention plans, SPCC documentation, FESOP and other environmental risk management policies, plans and procedures
- Conducts training
- Provides environmental training as necessary for applicable personnel
- Attends appropriate training
- Works on special projects within the department.
- Communicates with internal/external customers.
- Answers inquiries via phone, email or in-person.
- Develops effective relationships internally and externally with all levels of personnel
- Provides highest levels of customer service.
- Maintains highest levels of confidentiality, integrity and ethics
- Promotes and maintains safe work environment.
- Exhibits safe work behaviors
- Wears all prescribed PPE
Work Environment The work environment described here is representative of those that experienced by an employee performing the essential functions of this job.
- Clerical office environment and field environment
- Indoor lab conditions that include standard office equipment such as computers, photocopier, phone, filing cabinets, fax machines, cubicles
- Field environment includes exposure to asphalt, concrete, heavy equipment, noise, inclement weather, outdoor conditions, moving vehicles, asphalt and concrete plants, aggregate plants/pits, waterways, fill sites, chemicals and other materials
Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Sits at a desk several hours a day
- Uses computer screens several hours a day
- Performs data entry, alpha and 10-key numeric, on a keyboard
- Uses copy/fax to scan documents
- May lift up to 20lbs of equipment
- Traverses' outdoor terrain including uneven terrain, gravel, dirt, asphalt, concrete, mud
- Travels up and down stairs both indoors and outdoors at asphalt and concrete plant locations
Travel Travel is required throughout the state to various plants, job sites and field offices, as well as governmental offices.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Chemistry or related field
- 2-5 years previous experience in an environmental compliance position
Preferred Education and Experience
- Documented work experience in highway construction industry
- Related industry and/or professional certification
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental compliance regulations
- Ability to collect and analyze data
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills
- Experience with Microsoft 365
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
- Must adhere to drug free workplace requirements, including random testing
- If required to drive a company vehicle, must have or be able to obtain valid, state driver's license and meet company driver requirements
