Sample Entrepreneur in Residence New Ventures Group Job Description

Entrepreneur in Residence New Ventures Group

Job Summary:

The New Ventures team seeks to create a senior full-time role that embodies and personifies entrepreneurial spirit throughout its key focus areas of investment, acceleration, and incubation. This role will bring deep practical experience and perspective to New Ventures' already-thriving venture capital arm (HG Ventures), established accelerator program (The Heritage Group Accelerator), and emerging internal incubation efforts. Its overarching mandate is to infuse these focus areas with insight, wisdom and savvy borne of long and varied entrepreneurial history, mentor those individuals (start-up Founders and CEO's) on whom New Ventures has placed financial or developmental bets, and partner with New Ventures leadership to enrich and enliven all of its efforts.

Our ideal candidate thus will possess a long and varied entrepreneurial track record, preferably in multiple aspects of the innovation ecosystem (management, board, investor, etc.), and will have reached a career stage where the role of coach and counsel is more appealing than "starting the next thing." The role is not--as the EIR position is practiced elsewhere-a holding tank while looking for another position. Rather, it is conceived as a permanent fixture within New Ventures where value is created continuously, but indirectly-that is, by contributing to the success of the individuals, business and undertakings championed within New Ventures programs.

This is not to say, however, that the Entrepreneur in Residence will be relegated merely to passive advice-giving. Especially in the area of internal incubation, the EIR will be called upon to engage more directly and actively in the very early stages of ideation, evaluation and entity conceptualization and formation. Likewise, the EIR may be called upon by Accelerator companies for more direct participation in things like customer exploration or interviews for key hires-where there tends to be no substitute for seasoned judgment.

Fundamentally, New Ventures seeks a teammate intentionally situated to bring to its activities sage, real-world entrepreneurial wisdom, and the ability to make all of its assets better through the EIR's shared experiences.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Interact with New Ventures stakeholders to provide advice and direction based on the EIR'S entrepreneurial experience
  • Leverage EIR's network to expand the range of assets available to New Ventures and its programs
  • Organize and spearhead early-stage internal incubation projects
  • Advise HG Ventures on internal incubation investment opportunities
  • Serve as a resource to the Accelerator both in recruiting potential Accelerator companies and mentoring the cohort
  • Provide specialized advice to HG Ventures portfolio company management when requested
  • Participate in innovation culture programming produced by the Innovation Support team
  • Report to the Executive Vice President of New Ventures, with dotted-line relationships to the Accelerator team

The successful candidate will have the following profile:

  • Deep and varied experience in leadership roles for multiple early-stage, venture backed companies
  • Fluency and familiarity with venture financing terms and structures
  • Ideally, full-cycle experience including successful exits; some experience with (occasional) unsuccessful outcomes a plus, not a minus
  • Experience in board management and participation
  • Enthusiasm for mentoring and coaching
  • Approachability-especially relating to younger entrepreneurs
  • Good communication skills and ability to navigate multiple stakeholder interests throughout a large organization
  • Confidence and experience in evaluating innovative opportunities
  • Comfortable engaging with business and financial modelling
  • Able to anticipate early-stage company needs including IP strategy, market fit, management team architecture, pricing, prototyping, pilots, etc.
  • Deep professional network
