Director, Enterprise Payroll

Job Summary

Reporting to the VP, HRSS, the Director, Enterprise Payroll is responsible for leading and managing the operations supporting the employee life cycle across the enterprise, multiple legal entities, multiple states, and multiple payroll systems.  This role is responsible for ensuring activities related to Payroll, HRIS Payroll Data Entry and other HR cyclical process are executed with professionalism, accuracy, and efficiency and within the rules and regulations of the regions in which The Heritage Group companies operate. The Director, Enterprise Payroll will lead THG payroll teams from its current state through an interim state of process improvement, role and work changes, system implementations, and stakeholder management to a future state with an employee-focused and on-demand service delivery model.  In addition, this role ensures the activities of the Payroll team support overall HR strategic priorities.

Essential Job Functions

40% Operations Management

  • Manages the Viewpoint Payroll Manager and team, the PeopleSoft payroll team, and the enterprise tax analyst
  • Manages systems and processes required to ensure accurate and timely production, distribution, and reporting of company-wide payroll, payroll tax management & reporting (federal, state, and local), year-end processes (e.g., W-2), garnishments, and unemployment compensation
  • Builds and maintains a strong functional team through effective training, coaching, team building, and succession planning
  • Ensures legal compliance by leading audit and reporting development and building an infrastructure of checks and balances
  • Leads and project manages implementation of additional groups into payroll systems and services.  Balances the need for standardization with the needs of each business
  • Fosters and maintains positive relationships with internal stakeholders and external parties such as vendors, state, local and federal agencies
  • Proactively partners with HR leaders across business units and serve as the liaison with internal/external clients and functional teams to ensure effective delivery of HR Services
  • Serves as an example and sets expectations for confidentiality and integrity

40% Process Improvement

  • Assesses the current state of the PeopleSoft and Viewpoint payroll systems, pay practices, processes, and practices
  • Inspires an environment of process improvement and business transformation
  • Develops a plan for transitioning from the current state to an efficient, timely future state; prioritizes gaps and addresses timely
  • Drives operational excellence of team by taking a deep dive into problems, owning end to end aspects of process improvements, and building processes/tools/system changes that scale to meet business needs
  • Develops and implements clear service level agreements with metrics for core services and transactions across business units and tracks team's ability to meet expectations
  • Influences and partners with HRSS leaders to meet payroll goals, HRSS process improvements, HRSS system changes, etc.

20% Change Management

  • Collaborates with and influences internal and external clients on process changes that improve efficiency, employee experience, and compliance
  • Inspires team and stakeholders on the long term vision
  • Ties short term changes to long term benefits and long term HRSS strategy
  • Finds win-wins

 Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Human Resources, or similar field; and 10 years of relevant work experience 
  • 10 years in a leadership capacity with direct reports, 5 years managing leaders
  • Experience managing payroll for multiple businesses or entities OR experience with quantifiable results in business transformation
  • Experience managing projects related to improving technology, processes, or efficiencies within a team
  • Experience with top tier Human Capital Management or Payroll systems a plus
  • MBA or CPP preferred
