Milestone Contractors has an opening for a Union Superintendent on a Utility crew.

We are is a fully integrated highway, heavy construction, asphalt paving, concrete paving, and site-development general contractor providing construction services throughout the state of Indiana and beyond.

Milestone is signatory to the Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA), the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), and the Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Council of Carpenters (IKORCC). Per our collective bargaining agreements, craft workers must be a member of one of the above unions as a condition of employment. Individuals who are not currently members must be able to become a member and maintain membership.

Position Summary

Manages a crew in general construction (utility, pipe, earthwork), asphalt, concrete, or bridge disciplines; maintaining the highest levels of safety and meeting or exceeding company and customer quality standards.


Essential Functions:

  • Leads a construction crew
    • Executes work schedules
    • Assists with determining manpower, materials and equipment requirements
    • Ensures resource availability
    • Provides weekly schedule updates
    • Circumvents and solves problems that may cause delays in completing work; escalates when necessary
    • Ensures work complies with technical specifications, drawings and schedules
    • May perform construction work on the project
  • Supervises craft employees
    • Assigns and audits work of laborers, carpenters, operators and Teamsters
    • Submits and approves craft dailies and timecards, ensuring accuracy of information
    • Manages performance of employees; ensures that work meets customer and company expectations for quality and technical specifications
    • Resolves conflicts and labor relations issues; understands contract agreements with regard to scheduling and assigning work
  • Communicates with co-workers and supervisors
    • Advises project superintendent, project manager or senior managers of problems, potential problems, schedule difficulties
    • Shares information about work plan with subordinates, peers, subcontractors
    • Collaborates with project control, estimating, schedule and equipment to keep project on schedule
    • Facilitates collaboration among work crews
  • Promotes and maintains safe work environment.
    • Exhibits safe work behaviors; evaluates work area for hazards; eliminates or controls hazards; follows and enforces all safety policies
    • Wears all prescribed PPE
    • Leads daily safety huddles and safety training; follows safe work plans
    • Ensures subordinate employees are following safe work plan and exhibiting safe behaviors

Required Education and Experience

  • HS Diploma or GED; or equivalent work experience
  • Union membership in good standing; or ability to achieve and maintain union membership
  • 5 years of experience in heavy highway construction industry, with an emphasis on utility construction, including 1 year of supervision

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
  • Must adhere to drug free workplace and union substance abuse testing requirements
  • If required to drive a company vehicle, must have or be able to obtain valid, state driver's license and meet company driver requirements

Work Authorization/Security Clearance (if applicable) Must be authorized to work in the United States, as verified through E-Verify. Some job sites may require additional criminal background testing.
