Construction Materials Technician

The Construction Materials Technician will be responsible for working with a team focused on asphalt pavement recycling to accurately and consistently test construction materials related to asphalt mixes in a timely manner.  This will involve sampling and processing road and quarry materials, batching and producing specimens, testing specimens, analyzing data, and problem solving.  The technician will report to a project engineer. Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Observe safe work practices at all times
  • Follow industry-standard preparation and testing protocol and quality control guidelines.
  • Record and organize information from a variety of sources accurately
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the mix design team, The Heritage Research Group, associated Heritage Construction Materials companies, D.O.T. personnel, and personnel from various agencies
  • Obtain state D.O.T., county, city, etc. materials and testing standards in a timely manner Do we need this?
  • Collect samples from existing roads, quarries, and plant locations for evaluation
  • Use a variety of heavy-duty saws and drills to effectively prepare road samples
  • Prepare and test specimens according to industry standards and specifications Do we need this?
  • Evaluate and analyze test results and take corrective action when needed
  • Assist in general maintenance and calibration of all laboratory and road equipment
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
    • Associates or Bachelor's degree in a construction or science related field is encouraged
  • Experience in materials testing, construction, or laboratory work is preferred
  • Strong attention to detail with high standards and integrity
  • Timely, positive and professional work habits.
  • Time management skills and superb multitasking ability
  • Effective communication skills
  • Respond proactively to anticipated needs or issues
  • Able to adapt quickly to change
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow ASTM, AASHTO, D.O.T., county, etc. testing methods
  • Capability of interacting with individuals from a variety of backgrounds
  • Work well in a team environment

Work Environment:

  • This position may ask the following physical requirements: sitting or standing for long periods of time, lifting up to 50 pounds, bending to lift, crouching, kneeling, and walking
  • This position regularly asks the individual to work safely in environments with dust and noise using the proper personal protective equipment
  • Individuals must be willing to travel up to 25% (intermittently) and to work overtime as needed
