Construction Laborer Apprentice

Milestone Contractors, LP is currently accepting applications for construction laborer apprentices.  Apprentices participate in a four year apprenticeship program that combines mandatory classroom training with on the job experience.  Milestone is a heavy highway construction contractor, so all work is conducted outside.  We are signatory to the Laborers International Union of North America.  If not currently a union member, you must be willing to join and maintain union membership.  Milestone is an equal opportunity employer. Position Summary

Performs a variety of tasks involving physical labor in general construction, asphalt, concrete, or bridge disciplines, maintaining the highest levels of personal safety and meeting or exceeding company and customer quality standards.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Performs strenuous physical labor on job sites.
    • Digs trenches; sets braces
    • Cleans/prepares sites; cleans rubble and debris; removes waste materials
    • Loads and unloads trucks; hoists and hauls materials
  • Uses hand and power tools.
    • Prepares and moves tools around job sites
    • Uses power tools to remove and set asphalt and/or concrete
    • Uses hand tools to set braces, dig trenches, prepare sites, shovel materials
  • Communicates with co-workers and supervisors
    • Advises foreman or superintendent of problems or potential problems
    • Shares information about work plan with co-workers
    • Collaborates with assigned work crews
  • Promotes and maintains safe work environment.
    • Exhibits safe work behaviors; evaluates work area for hazards; eliminates or controls hazards
    • Wears all prescribed PPE
    • Participates in daily safety huddles and safety training; follows safe work plans
    • Reads and understands hazard signs, training materials, work plans, instruction manuals

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The work environment described here is representative of those that experienced by an employee performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Continuous exposure to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites, including heights, moving vehicles, stopped traffic
  • Outdoor conditions that include inclement weather, precipitation, heat, humidity, dust, asphalt and/or concrete, dirt
  • Regular exposure to noise, including horns, mechanical equipment, heavy equipment, jackhammers
  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes and airborne particles
  • Work can include day or night time hours

 

Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Lifts, pushes, pulls, pours or carries heavy objects, loads of material, tools
  • Walks and stands for long periods of time, including up and down hills, over uneven terrain
  • Bends, stoops, squats, reaches to move, mix and test materials
  • Uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue;
  • Uses good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination, with the ability to quickly move arms and legs
  • Possess excellent stamina to work between 8-12 hours per day; sometimes 6 days per week

 

Required Education and Experience

  • HS Diploma or GED, or ability to obtain GED within one year
  • Ability to qualify for and maintain union apprenticeship program status

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen
  • Must adhere to drug free workplace and union substance abuse testing requirements
  • If required to drive a company vehicle, must have or be able to obtain valid, state driver's license and meet company driver requirements

Work Authorization/Security Clearance (if applicable) Must be authorized to work in the United States, as verified through E-Verify.  Some job sites may require additional criminal background testing.
