Asphalt Lab Technician

Summary

The Lab Technician for The Heritage Group (THG) is responsible for utilizing proper methods of testing of asphalt, emulsion and other materials with the purpose of evaluating quality and process control and/or acceptance. The Lab Technician is key in holding the standard of product quality and providing general support wherever needed. The Lab Technician will monitor and test process functions and materials to ensure products meet or exceed requirements of the appropriate agency or customer.


The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can take the Initiative and complete assignments in a self-directed manner, can manage multiple projects of varying scope and size and with competing deadlines, and capable of interacting successfully in a variety of environments, (office, plant, lab, field).

*Qualified applicants must be willing to work fully on-site at our NW side Indianapolis office & lab, residing in the Indianapolis area*


Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
• Follow all safety protocols and guidelines, mentor and develop the THG safety culture with all teammates
• Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for related testing methods and equipment
• Follow and execute industry-standard preparation and testing protocols and quality control guidelines.
• Record and organize information from a variety of sources accurately
• Independently lead day to day mix design processes while collaborating with leaders to reach deadlines for internal and external customers
• Communicate effectively with all members of the binder team, The Heritage Research Group, associated Heritage Construction Materials companies, D.O.T. personnel, and personnel from various agencies
• Collect samples from existing roads, quarries, and plant locations for evaluation
• Evaluate and analyze test results and take corrective action when needed
• Identify areas for improvement around safety, quality, and efficiency
• Assist in general maintenance and calibration of all laboratory and road equipment
• Maintain good housekeeping practices
• Work well in a team environment
• Mentor and train others on laboratory testing and safety protocols


Required Qualifications
• Associates degree or higher in a construction or science related field
• Relevant experience in materials testing, construction, or laboratory work
• Strong attention to detail with high standards and integrity
• Ability to read, understand, and follow ASTM, AASHTO, D.O.T., County, etc. testing methods


Work Environment
• This position may ask the following physical requirements: sitting or standing for long periods of time, lifting up to 50 pounds, bending to lift, crouching, kneeling, and walking
• This position regularly asks the individual to work safely in environments with dust, noise, and asphalt fumes using the proper personal protective equipment
