The Formulation Chemist will have responsibility for asphalt product research and development.  This hands-on role will help to support multiple plants in the production of products, driving new technology development throughout a 17 plant organization.  The role will spend a substantial time in the asphalt plants, building product knowledge and problem-solving.


  • Responsible for product performance.
  • Exploring and pursuing new innovations to integrate into new products
  • Experimenting on the bench with conventional, non-conventional and creative approaches to discover new technologies, new formula bases, raw ingredients and processing techniques that leads to unique product claims and benefits
  • Investigate and analyze performance issues.
  • Handle complex projects simultaneously while establishing priorities, time milestones and completion dates for projects.
  • Maintain a product development pipeline in alignment with business objectives.
  • Over time, provide support to plant operations on troubleshooting during pilot and full-scale manufacturing.
  • In time, develop understanding and address product performance and create improvements when necessary through a partnership with sales, marketing, engineering, plants, and customers.
  • Support the creation and capture of data in a SharePoint platform to enable key learnings for the business and R&D group. Document learning path to support company growth objectives. 


  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related science or engineering discipline. 
  • A minimum of 2-5 years experience in industrial formulation research & development.
  • Experience in formulation processing, colloid chemistry, surface chemistry, surfactants, and emulsions required.
  • Experience with product development in the paint & coatings, cosmetics, or surfactants preferred. 
  • A proven track record of creativity and driving innovation within a fast-paced and entrepreneurial research environment as evidenced by new product introductions, patents, publications and/or novel product claims.
  • Ability to build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to effective impact product development.
  • Ability to work as an individual contributor as well as within a team setting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to interact with customers and evaluate product performance at a field level.
  • Excellent innovative thinking and research ability.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledgeable in API standards, EPA and ASTM methods.
  • Experience in pilot batching and scale-ups.
  • Basic knowledge of typical lab testing methods such as titrations, distillations, organic synthesis, gravimetric methods and basic analytical test methods.
  • Must be available to travel up to 80% during peak season.
